Painting peace in a time of war

Nerine Read’s father, Donald Orr, served as a volunteer with the South African Armed Forces during WWII. His first posting, in 1943, was to Egypt, where he received Signals training. Having previously attended art school in Cape Town, he began painting pictures of his environment in his free time. In parallel, he kept a detailed diary.
